Cyclone Yaas ; Disaster Response
Cyclone Yaas was a relatively strong and very damaging tropical cyclone that made landfall in Odisha and brought significant impacts to West Bengal during late May 2021. On May 22, a low-pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal. On the next day, the disturbance intensified into a depression. On May 23, the system further intensified into a cyclonic storm. On May 25, The storm subsequently reached its peak intensity of 140 km/h (85 mph) in three-minute sustained wind speeds. On May 26, Yaas made landfall north of Dhamra Port and south of Bahanaga at the same intensity. In West Bengal, More than 4,500 villages were damaged. Various rural homes and agricultural lands were hard-hit, and basic needs such as drinking water, sanitation, and the like were also hard to come by. At least 143 marine vehicles were broken into.
Starting on May 25, heavy rains and strong winds started to brush the coastal and inland areas of West Bengal. The storm Yaas caused weak earthen embankments to break and caused floods. Lots of houses collapsed, lots of tress uprooted, lots of ponds, farms were flooded, lots of people were homeless. At this time the fishes in the ponds and other animals died & were floating in the flood water. As a result, the whole area smelled bad. The incidence of pathogens was increasing. People were totally helpless.
We, Kuemuri Sangram Sangha at first rescued flood affected people and shifted to safer places. We would provide cooked meal to 550 people twice a day. And we also provided dry food packages to about 7500 villagers. To ruin the stench and germs we spread the bleaching powder and quicklime in the affected areas. We have renovated many pond by our volunteers. We distributed clothes to the flood affected people. We planted a lot of trees after the cyclone Yaas. We donated tarpaulin over 150 people. Our organization provided fish to some poor people who had lost their fishes in ponds during Yaas. Many charitable organizations like Ramakrishna Mission ( Sarisha Diamond harbor branch & Swamiji ancestral house branch ), Aariyom Foundation, PDMSS, BTS etc. and many well-wishers & honorable persons extend their support for the affected people. We thankful to many organizations and well-wishers for helping us.
